Leading Roles

AARON

"My mother, Ev... 'Flora' just recently brought me here, so excuse my culture shock. And lack of shirt."

One day his parents were wealthy New York socialite Evelyn Fleumel and a college history professor named Benjamin Cymons, the next they were Princess Florimel of Amber and a Shadow of his dead uncle Benedict. Raised in ignorance of his heritage, Aaron had it suddenly shoved in his face when his mother, fearing for his safety, brought Aaron and his father to Amber.

ANDREW

"No quote available...yet."

The son of Finndo and a Shadow woman he never knew.  As a young child he was placed in the care of the Head Master of Lochaber Academy and raised on the ways of war.  From time to time, he left the academy to travel the loosely-knit Shadows that surrounded it, often returning as an instructor to share his experience with a new generation of students.

ANYSSA OF HOUSE HENDRAKE

"I am sorry if you find this odd....but surely you cannot imagine 9 children and one woman were going to storm in and take Amber?"

Twin Sister of Avda of Hendrake. A bit of an oddity in House Hendrake, she has chosen the study of healing magicks over the traditional family profession.

CALUGO OF HOUSE ARAKASI

"I have just learned to accept what happens in life and move on, it is a waste of effort and time to do otherwise."

Born into Arakasi, the House of spies, she was sent to Amber during the Patternfall War in the hopes that she could locate and make off with the Jewel of Judgement. She wandered the palace, unable to find the Jewel (it was in use at the time), and soon found herself falling in love with the kingdom at the other end of the universe. She realized, then that she was unable to betray it. Banished for her failure, she roamed Shadow, eventually settling in Amber. She 'went straight', and became an apprentice seamstress, later inheriting a business in the district of Amber City known as Little Chaos.

CISTERIA

"Let us see who is the more trusting, the most sincere. Give me the signal, and I will open this seal. My faith is the only thing that protects me."

The daughter of Faiella and one of Oberon's disinherited sons, she was raised in a noble house of Amber as the daughter of a servant. Upon her father's death, the king discovered the secret of her parentage and had her banished from Amber. In the vast expanse of Shadow, she discovered God and faith, later founding her own order, the Cistercians. But despite her newfound faith, Cisteria's memories of the family and her betrayal by her own mother have caused her to harbor a deep-seated hatred toward the royal family and their ways.

DESDEMONA

"You freely slander this family and this kingdom. You succor and consort with the enemy... the very forces which are currently plotting to unravel creation. You spit on us all and try to undermine the good we, united for once, are trying to accomplish. And yet, you have the gall to come before us, speaking of your innocence? The only reason you still live is because I was curious to find out why you came back."

The mysterious girl rarely emerging from her room is how most of the family knows Desdemona. For the fifty years since her mother Fiona's death, she has rarely seen the sky, preferring life in her rooms and laboratory and receiving only the king and Prince Julian as visitors. The recent troubles have breathed life and purpose into her, and her desire to learn the ways of the universe have carried her farther into the unknown reaches than most would dare go. Her devotion to her family is, as always, her driving force.

JOSS KENARD

"How about telling me what I need to know to avoid looking like a complete idiot?"

Joss is the long-lost son of Gerard, until recently thought to be the deceased son of Gerard. He served a short stint in Amber's navy, unknown to everyone but his father, but he was shipped off into Shadow during the struggle for the throne. When Gerard was named Regent of Amber, he sent for his son, but Joss' journey homeward was interrupted by the Shadowstorm that resulted from Oberon's repair of the Pattern. He found himself in an eddy of Shadow, a sort of Bermuda triangle where wayward ships drifted in and became trapped. Years of residence there gave him some control over the place, though not enough to escape on his own.

KANDICE OF HOUSE KANDICE

"I'm not bothered by any of that formal stuff. It's just a pain in the ass as far as I'm concerned."

While wandering Shadow one day, Kandice came upon a person who appeared to be of substance, but was not from the Courts. They claimed to be from a kingdom called Amber, the one, true kingdom of which all others...you get the picture. She returned to Chaos and told of her discovery to the king, thus the first reported contact between Amber and Chaos. As a reward, she was given her own House, thus creating KandiceWays. She is a favorite of King Swayvil and was recently named the Courts' interim Ambassador to Amber in Merlin's temporary absence.

NISHAD BIN CAITRARATHI

"There's no earthly way of knowing which direction we are going. There's no knowing where we're rowing, or which way the river's flowing. Is it raining? Is it snowing? Is a hurricane a blowing? There's not a speck of light a showing, so the danger must be growing. Are the fires of hell a glowing? Is the grizzly reaper mowing? Yes, the danger must be growing, for the rowers keep on rowing, and they're certainly not showing any signs that they are slowing." He chuckles, "I always loved that."

The eldest son of Caitrarathi, Chieftess of the Ghandarva Kanai, Nishad was sired by Beltempest of the Lokapala. A bit more militant than his Ghandarva kin, Shadi makes his grey father proud. He has been sent to Amber, to report of his tribe's findings in Shadow and assist Adram in the good fight.

REYNARD

"Mes amis, the Pattern is not a mystery, it is the mystery.  I have sought its meaning in the curve of a blade and the arch of a cathedral; in the arms of a lover and the bottom of a wineglass; in the mind of an enemy and the heart of a friend.  Have I found it?  Ne toujours jamais. Always and
never."

The son of Julian, though he was raised as the ward of Garet, a woodsman, on the fringe of Arden.  Educated throughout Amber and the Golden Circle, his identity was a secret to all but those closest to him until a chance meeting with Fiona.  From her he learned the bare necessities of magick and everything he knows about the Pattern.  When Julian discovered their secret association, Reynard was chased from Amber with a pack of Storm Hounds at his heels and has not been seen since.

ROLAND

"I guess people were finding me pretty difficult after that happened. I adored Deirdre and worshipped Dad, and I guess I wasn't all that sane for awhile. I suppose that when the other kids think of me, it's that person they remember. Wavering between suicide and homicide, prone to dismaying episodes of grief whenever some detail reminded me of one of them..."

Son of Prince Benedict and Duchess Jacquenetta of Rantallo. Wishing desperately for a son, and aware that her husband was unable to give her one, the Duchess saw Benedict at a state function and seduced him (yes, you read that right) that very night. Roland was in his mid-30's before he discovered his true parentage. He travelled the Golden Circle, getting every scrap of training he could...then Deirdre found him, and helped him get to the Pattern and avoid Benedict until he felt he'd earned his place by his father's side. He now serves as Amber's Minister of Defense.

THE SCRIVENER

"I came as quickly as I could. Regrettably, breakfast was not a high point on the agenda."

At the exact halfway point between Amber and the Courts of Chaos lies a shrine virtually unknown to any but the Kanai. It keeps a record of the events which led to the perpetuation of Memory, Time, and Life as we know it. Within its walls is a great library, a record of all history throughout Shadow kept in several different media. The keeper of this library is The Scrivener, the ultimate historian, with detailed knowledge of all major events occuring throughout the universe. His origins are shrouded in mystery, and though he is an icon of memory, he's occupied his position for so long that no one can remember how he got there.

TASHA

"Were you really looking for me out there, or were you just looking for a picturesque spot to take a leak?"

Tasha is Caine's daughter, and a little too much like her old man for anyone to forget it. She's competitive, irritating, sleazy, cocky, snakey, merciless, remorseless...as far as anyone knows. She has to squint hard to see the line between serious and humorous and even then, she usually just ignores it.

VEKTA

"No quote available...yet."

A Tanaka outcast.  The offspring of a Yirunda commander and one of his Caksusa troops, Vekta was abandoned the day after her birth and forced to fend for herself in the desert nation of Bhaga.  Ridiculed by her father's people and resented by her mother's, she has gone through life tolerating insults and obeying commands.
