Elladan and Caelan are the twin sons of Colonel Lord Kaelvin of Hendrake and Princess Deirdre of Amber. They were born as their parents' relationship was being torn apart by the approching Patternfall War. They raised by their mother in her Shadow, and often received visits from their father.

Upon Deirdre's passing six years later, Kaelvin returned and claimed his sons, raising them as proper Hendrake men. Their dual heritage wasn't exactly a secret in Hendrake, but it was not something that was widely known.

Both the boys were greatly affected by their mother's death. Elladan became independent, following in his father's footsteps and learning the ways of the sword at an early age. Caelan, however, became more needy, starving for attention and mothering, something his father could not offer him. He clung to Lady Viviane Hendrake, adopting her as a mother-figure. Elladan filled the role of Elder son and namesake, while Caelan looked and acted like the younger.

Their childhood was a rough one, as would be expected of a child of Hendrake. Others learning of their invitation led to frequent fights and duels.
