Savyon, Before the Occludement
This is for GM reference only. If you are playing in BrokeDown Palace, and have a hard time separating in- character knowledge from out of character knowledge and foreknowledge, BUGGER OFF!

Savyon was the result of Deirdre’s first real love affair in Shadow. She was young and foolish, and what amounted to a passing fling found her pregnant and unhappy. She had the child out in Shadow, where she arranged for nannies to take care of him during those pesky formative years where she would have to be an attentive parent…something she was not ready to do.

When Savyon was twelve, he was brought home to Amber to meet his grandfather. This single experience left a lasting impression. He was larger than life: cruel, over-bearing, controlling. Savyon was an innocent, raised in a simple, honest fashion. He found himself in a dark, dangerous world, led there by a mother that neither knew nor loved him. So he became an introvert, happy to be left alone to play, to read, to be.

He would run away often, finding his way to the city, to the beach, to Arden, to the caves, to Rebma. Sneaking away was the only way he could really live. It was during these trips that he made friends, got into fights, lost his virginity… never admitting his heritage to those he got close to. This duality went on for many years, even after he grew up and was able to leave Amber.

On one of his sojourns through the caves, he got lost. Wandering about, he came to a hallway that ended in a door. Opening the door, he found the Pattern in all its brilliance. After checking to make sure no one was approaching, he set foot upon it. As he tried to pull his foot off, Oberon appeared behind him. “Keep walking, you little shit, keep walking or die.” So he did. His existence, everything, became clear.

Reaching the center of the Pattern, he commanded it to take it to “the ultimate source of knowledge on the Pattern.” He found himself on the plane of the Primal Pattern, and Dworkin’s guest.

For years, he listened to Dworkin’s ramblings, trying desperately to glean some insight from his madness. Once he was done, he went to Oberon, learning what he could while his grandfather would tolerate him. Once the old man grew tired of answering questions, he went to Brand and Fiona. His quest was never for power: it was for understanding.

Years turned into decades turned into centuries. Fiona, confirmed what he had already known: he listened and learned until he knew he had found all the answers about the Pattern he was going to be told. He then decided to go out and put them into practice, roaming Shadow, applying what he had learned, learning finesse and subtlety.

He found he had a knack for invention, combining his skills with the Pattern with objects of his creation, making existing things and items of his own design better… more functional.

Every few years, he would return to Amber. He would spend time with his aunt Fiona and uncle Brand, and would at least be civil with his mother. He would always sneak away from the palace, preferring to be like everyone else rather than partake in the pomp and circumstance of being a member of the Royal family in town.

On his last few visits before the war, his treks would take him to Rebma. There, he fell in love with the surroundings and the people. He also fell in love with a beautiful blind girl the Queen had figured would never marry. Their affair was passionate, though secretive. Moins permitted the affair, in the hopes Vialle would so ensnare Savyon he would take her as his wife.

During Patternfall, Fiona approached him after Brand had strayed off their original course for assistance. He created devices to keep tabs on the main players of the War on both sides, then went about putting the information network into place. He worked in secret, his supposed allegiance being with Eric’s faction.

Eric had sent him to check on Florimel’s progress with Corwin on Shadow Earth, too late, however, as Corwin had made his way to Amber. Eric commanded Savyon to remain on Earth in reserve. Eric died, and Savyon was never recalled. He watched the events of the War unfold through the devices he had created. The War ended, and Savyon returned to Amber and swore fealty to King Random and the new Queen, his former lover, now Random’s bride.

Crushed, he returned to Shadow, where he perfected his abilities with invention. By this time, he had created a sort of hand-held computer that would work anywhere that would store and operate Trumps through Psychic suggestions. He has also made a watch that would always keep time in Amber, as well as the current time wherever he happened to be.

He was researching creating weapons similar to Greyswandir, utilizing the Pattern, when he received news of the King and Queen’s disappearance. He joined the rest of the family in their search, following every long-shot lead he came across with no success. Soon thereafter, Fiona disappeared. This only served to strengthen his resolve in finding his family. He continued the search along with Gerard and Benedict.

An impatient call from Gerard came. He told Savyon of Dworkin’s plan to keep Amber safe. The land would be cut off from the rest of Shadow. His options were either to remain a safe prisoner in Amber, or continue the search with the danger still very much alive.

Savyon had made a vow. He would continue the search…
